The nations of Greece, Israel and Cyprus signed an initial agreement on Monday to build the world’s longest and deepest underwater power cable in an effort to link the electrical grids of the three nations. Earlier this year, Greece brought forward its deadline for phasing out coal power to 2025, and the country's national energy plan aims for 61 of electricity demand to come from renewables by 2030. The project will then be connected to the planned Eurasian Internet. Both Greece and Cyprus will benefit from connecting their power grids to Egypt’s, taking advantage of the lower cost of energy from solar parks in the North African country. Grid operator IPTO will build a larger 1 billion euro underwater power link to connect Crete to the mainland power grid by 2023. The memorandum of understanding between the two countries will be signed in Athens. Greece is keen on its low-cost connection to power grid Egypt, where energy comes from solar parks. Officials from the Greek Ministry of Energy said that Greece and Egypt are scheduled to sign an agreement on Thursday to build a submarine cable connecting the two countries’ power grids.
